F2 Books for Bedtime event., by Miss Birch

Date: 8th Feb 2024 @ 9:13am

“Being read to provides comfort for children, improving their concentration and focus. Being read to gives children knowledge to understand and talk about the world around them. When children understand what is being read this helps them understand how words, phrases and sentences are put together.” Gov.uk Help for Early Years Providers.

At St Georges reading is at the heart of our curriculum and all of our children have access to a range of high quality literature. We read a decodable book once a day in our phonic sessions and take one home each Friday alongside a story book for our grown ups to read to us. This week we have enjoyed our 'Books for Bedtime' event when we learnt all about the importance of reading. We come into school in the evening wearing our pyjamas and got cosy under the twinkling fairy lights. We then enjoyed listening to storys with props, puppets and masks. We even have a yummy hot chocolate and biscuit.

Football teams' fundraiser for damaged defibrillator, by Mrs Walters

Date: 19th Oct 2023 @ 12:49pm

UPDATE: Thank you to everyone who donated to this fundraiser. The club has reached the £1,000 target and is now waiting to have the defib machine fitted.

A member of our staff team is raising funds to replace a vital defibrillator, which had the battery stolen, leaving it unusable.

John Evans, St George’s Finance and Office Manager, is a football coach with the Cheshire Girls Football League Wirral.

For the last five years they have had a defibrillator on hand and readily available for anyone to use at Arrowe Park playing fields, where it can be instantly accessed should the need arise.

They were absolutely horrified on Saturday 14th October to discover someone had stolen the battery pack that provides the power in case of emergency use.

The battery can only be accessed by removing the unit from its zipped up case and deliberately releasing it via a catch. The battery pack itself is of no use as it only fits the defibrillator but costs £280 to replace.

John said: “We are truly astonished at the depths someone has plunged to. The thought that someone has been so callous as to prevent the operation of life saving equipment goes beyond all understanding!!

The teams that use the playing fields are now raising funds to replace the defibrillator and add a special case to keep it safer.

Year 1 and 2 RNLI Beach Safety Assembly, by Mrs Cameron-Ivanov

Date: 23rd May 2023 @ 2:46pm

Today we had a visit from Andy and Sadie who are beach lifeguards all around the Wirral. We have lots of water surrounding us, because we live on a peninsula which means we have water on 3 sides of our land. These are the River Mersey, River Dee and the Irish Sea.

We learnt that RNLI stands for Royal National Lifeboat Institution. Next year the RNLI is 200 years old! They were founded in 1824, and used to use rowing boats to go out and rescue people, but today they have big boats that are almost unsinkable.

When you see the flag flying outside of a station, that means they’re on duty. They have stations in New Brighton, West Kirby and Hoylake, as well as beach patrols all around our coast. The RNLI have some different flags that they use. The red and yellow flag means it is safe for swimming, the red flag means DANGER and it is not safe to play in the sea. The next flag is black and white which means the area is for surfing and the final flag is orange and says “no inflatables” which means no blow up toys because it’s dangerous and you could get blown out to sea.

We talked about what we should do if we want to go swimming in the sea.

Before we go swimming in the sea, we need to stop and think about where is safe to swim. We should only swim on lifeguarded beaches. Swimming in the sea is very different to swimming in a swimming pool because we don’t know how deep the sea can be, or what dangers are beneath the surface.

It is really important to stay with your family and friends when you’re at the beach, so that you don’t get lost. If you do get lost, you can go to a lifeguard in their red and yellow uniform and they will help you.

We must be prepared when you go to the beach. Remember to take a sun hat, sunglasses, sun cream and water to drink.

If we fall into the water or find ourselves in a rip current, there are some things we can do to help ourselves. We can take deep breaths to stay calm, float in a starfish shape, wave our arm to catch attention and shout help! In a rip current you should try to swim parallel to the shore to get out of it.

We can call 999 or 112 and ask for the Coastguard if we see someone struggling out in the water. We must not go in ourselves to help. The coastguard will know exactly what to do!

Year 2 Sponsored Circuit Challenge, by Mrs Horton

Year 2 have been busy enjoying the sunshine this week, while raising money for Nathan Young. Nathan is an ex pupil who is representing Great Britain at the World Deaf Championships in Argentina. Year 2 have collected sponsorship for taking part in a speedy circuit challenge. Nathan came along to support. The children had a lot of fun.

Year 1 and Year 2's Coronation Celebration, by Mrs Stewart

Date: 5th May 2023 @ 1:08pm

The children in Year One and Two have had lots of fun celebrating King Charles III's coronation today. We started our day with a parade around the school garden's, waving our flags and cheering! Later, we enjoyed a celebratory picnic in the outdoor classroom. Year 2 went in the hall as the rain came just as our lunchtime began. Typical English weather!

We crowned our best dressed King and Queen, who recieved a lovely lego prize for their hard work on their outfits. Thank you for all of your hardwork, it was such a tricky decision to make!

We hope our families enjoy the celebrations this weekend and we look forward to hearing all about it on Tuesday, when we return to school.

F2-Year 6 Oracy Showcase, by Mrs Cameron-Ivanov

Date: 31st Mar 2023 @ 9:57am

Throughout this half term, children across all year groups have been learning about what human rights are and why we have them. Put simply, we now know that human rights are rights that everyone has, just for being human.

Each year group chose a human right to focus on and then put together an oracy based performance linked to their chosen right.

F2 have been reading Sharing a Shell by Julia Donaldson. In the story the animals discover that their lives are better when they work together. They linked this to the right of “Everyone has the right to a safe place to live”.

Year 1 created poems about jobs and how we all have the right to have a job. They looked at different jobs and the children discussed what they might want to be when they grow up.

Year 2 created a poem called “If I were in charge of the World”. This was linked this to the human right of “everyone has the right to leisure and play”. They thought about all the things
they could get rid of, so that everyone could have more time for the things they enjoy doing.

Year 3 worked together to create a poem all about children’s human rights. They were fortunate enough to perform their poem at a recent Y3/4 Wirral Schools Poetry Festival at
Park Primary School where they came 2nd place out of 7 schools. They even incorporated their drumming skills into their performance.

Year 4 also worked together to understand and explain how we have the right to think and voice our opinions freely. They worked in small groups to create short drama performance to show different examples of how people can think and voice their opinions freely.

Year 5’s focus has been on the right to an education. They began by looking at three verse poems and annotated patterns within them and how the verses varied between each one.
From here, they wrote a first draft of their own poems before editing and refining them to create a final piece, all the time reflecting on the meaning of their human right.

In Year 6, they focused on the right to seek asylum. They wanted their speeches to be emotive and thought provoking, so started by researching statistics and facts about asylum
seekers across the globe. They then began writing speeches to inform people about the horrific conditions some refugees and asylum seekers are facing in our current climate. After
watching some famous speeches, such as Martin Luther King’s I Have a Dream speech, they practised presenting their speeches to engage and inform an audience.

All year groups worked hard looking at the different strands of oracy: physical, cognitive, linguistic and social and emotional, and used these to enhance their performances.

A big well done to everyone who took part, and congratulations to those children who got to the final of our oracy showcase and performed at Holy Apostles and and Martyr's Parish Church. It was a pleasure to see all of the children perform for their grown ups and I think everyone would agree that the standards of oracy were high.

Thank you to Holy Apostles and and Martyr's Parish Church for hosting our oracy showcase, and to all the staff that made the event possible.

Please take some time to watch the performances and have a look at the photographs below.
