Inspired by top Innovators!, by Mrs Parker

Date: 12th Mar 2021 @ 6:59pm

Year 5 and 6 have had a great week of science and design-technology for British Science Week this week. The theme for this year was, "Innovation for the Future," and we were lucky enough to have not one, but three, top speakers join us remotely.

On Tuesday, Mr Julian Parker, director of Tayhope Enterprises Ltd and Titan Electricity Ltd joined us to talk about innovation. He explained that innovation is just a good idea that builds on what has come previously. The children were inspired to come up with their own inventions that were really impressive.

On Wednesday, Dr Neale Davies, an innovation champion at Clean Growth - a UK university consortium helping move innovative green technologies into commercialisation - talked about how "Teamwork makes the Dreamwork," using Marvel's "The Avengers" as an analogy. The children then had to come up with a list of people who could help them make their ideas  reality.

Finally, today, Mr David Brayne, from Innovate Edge - part of the government's innovation support unit - explained how the jobs of the future will change and that we don't even know what those jobs will be yet. He explained how important critical thinking, the ability to adapt and change and being able to get your ideas across are.

Year 6 Evacuation Day!, by Miss M Jones

Date: 12th Mar 2021 @ 7:07pm

Year 6 children were evacuated to Chirk on Wednesday following the outbreak of WW2. The children endured a long train journey in the pouring rain, but eventually arrived at their new school. Each child was given a label upon arrival and were introduced to their new teacher. They made carrot cookies, sock puppets, gas mask boxes, and even enjoyed some singing! Luckily, each child secured a new home safe in the countryside.

British Science Week Year 5 and 6, by Miss Hughes

Date: 12th Mar 2021 @ 7:07pm

Throughout the week, the children in Year 5 and 6 have thoroughly enjoyed participating in British Science Week 2021. The theme this year is 'Innovating for the Future' and the children have been getting creative making their own Rube Goldberg machines.

After getting a little creative motivation from the fabulous music video from OK Go, we constructed and programmed our very own Lego WeDo models to help start our mechanisms. We then got hands on in the Science lab and designed our own chain-reaction machines to help perform a simple task.

If the little scientist in you is curious, here is the link to our inspiration:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qybUFnY7Y8w

We had some setbacks….as well as some near misses with the dominos, but we overcame failure and showed true resilience. We went back to the drawing board and redesigned our chains so that they worked.

We were also lucky enough to have 3 guest speakers throughout the week. They spoke to us about innovation being all around us, how teamwork is crucial for innovation to succeed and STEM careers in the future.

Well done to all the children who took part in Science week, your enthusiasm and original creations were a joy to see!

Year 1 & 2 Science Week, by Miss Gough-Hughes

Date: 12th Mar 2021 @ 2:43pm

Throughout the week, the children in Year 1 and 2 have thoroughly enjoyed participating in British Science Week 2021. The theme this year is 'Innovating for the Future' and the children have been being innovative and showing their understanding. Innovation is a part of people, materials, animals, nature or anything else in our everyday lives. Innovation is all around us.

We have been investigating and looking at fruit, going on a bug hunt and looking closely at the features of bugs using a microscope, created our own robo-bugs inspired by our bug hunt and the innovativity of robots that are created these days and also researched famous scientists/innovators, writing interesting information about them.

This weekend, we have an exciting poster competition for your child to compete in, continuing our exciting Science themed week. Please login to your child's Seesaw account to see this task and how your child can participate. There will be a prize for the winner in year 1 and the winner in year 2.

Well done to all of the children for participating incredibly well in their first week back together! :)
