VE Day, by Miss Gough-Hughes

Date: 4th May 2020 @ 4:06pm

VE Day

To celebrate VE day, both year 1 and 2 have been busy creating a banner to display outside topsite. We used a stamp to print the flags and handprints to create the doves. See some images below of the children hard at work. Could you create a banner or poster to celebrate the 75th anniversary of VE day on the 8th? You can find weekly activities linked to VE day on the 'this week's learning tasks' section on the relevant year group page. Happy VE day! :)

Visit from Nathan Young - 2A & 2B, by Miss Gough-Hughes

Date: 20th Mar 2020 @ 8:23am

Nathan Young

The children thoroughly enjoyed a visit from our current learning hero, Nathan Young. Nathan is our hero this half term because of his postivitity, resilience and sheer determination to swim, despite him being deaf. Nathan was a pupil at St George's Primary school and now represents Great Britain on the deaf swimming team. He has taken part in the deaflympics in Turkey and has also been to various countries around the world to compete, winning lots of medals. The children have been learning all about him this term and why he is our hero. They were incredibly excited to see a real life hero come in to school. He told them about what it was like growing up and why he took up swimming. He even brought in some items for the children to look at including his bronze medal, swimming caps and swim shorts. The children asked Nathan some excellent questions about his journey, learning even more about him. Well done Nathan! We are proud to call your our learning hero!

Planning and Advice for Parents Regarding Partial Opening of St George's and Closure for Vast Majority of Pupils, by Mrs Walters

Date: 19th Mar 2020 @ 10:20am

Dear families, following last night's government's announcement, we will be in full planning mode today. The uncertainty regarding school closures has caused anxiety for families. What we now know is that from the end of the school day on Friday the 20th March the school will be closed to the majority of pupils. This is an 'indefinite measure'. We have no indication how long this will last for. This measure has been put in place to slow down the spread of the Covid-19 (coronavirus) virus. I am meeting with the Senior Leadership Team at 9.30am this morning to look at how we move forwards. Throughout this crisis we have applied the mantra that we act in a 'calm and informed' manner. That will be the case over the next few days. We recognise the pressure this will put on many families. School closures mean self-isolation and social distancing. It is not an extended holiday. We will be trying to ensure that your children are emotionally supported and reassured today. School is a place of safety and familiarity for children. We know that they will be confused and anxious. Message is that we are all ok at St George's. Closing school is a helpful step, so our communities are able to care better for those who are unwell. We will be sending home some resources and ideas to support your child's learning at home. We will be using the year group web pages of the website to ensure that we communicate with you and provide daily learning advice. http://www.stgeorges.wirral.sch.uk/classes If your child is currently off school, we will make the learning packs available on Friday afternoon from the school offices. The government have asked us to remain partially open for the most vulnerable pupils and for the families of key workers. That will include 'wrap around' Dragon Club provision and holiday club provision for children eligible under government guidance. In the spirit of the government's request to support key workers that offer will be open from nursery to year 6. At present we are unclear about the scope of that provision. The government have said that they will be providing clear guidance today on their expectations for schools, what roles 'key workers' will constitute and their plans for feeding free school meals children. As soon as we have this information we will be contacting families with further details about the school offer, who is eligible and how you will register for this. There is no need to contact us before then. As a staff team we are devastated to be closing. We come to work every day to provide the best care and opportunities for your children. Be reassured that we will continue working to ensure that we look after the families at St George's and planning to re-open at the earliest opportunity that we can safely educate and care for your pupils.

British science week 2020 - Year two, by Miss Gough-Hughes

Date: 12th Mar 2020 @ 8:06am

Image result for science week  Science week 2020

This week, the year two children have enjoyed celebrating British science week. We have been completing activities associated with space. Our main activity, was exploring what plants could (if they had all of the appropriate resources/equipment) grow and survive on space. The children explored various seeds, vegetables and fruit, identifying what they were. Then we discussed how these plants grow and what part of each item we actually eat. Many children were shocked at some of the results.  We then had a discussion about what plants would need to grow on space and decided which (if any) would be the best. We will be continuing our science week next week, completing more activities associated to space including: seeing what space looks like using VR, testing how craters are formed etc.

On a final note, there is a KS1 science section on the website if you want to see what we have been learning about this year. Additionally, there are some useful apps on there for your children to play linked to our science topics throughout KS1.
