Year 1 Nativity, by Miss Gough-Hughes

Date: 13th Dec 2018 @ 8:06am

Year 1 Nativity

This year, our year 1 nativity took place at Claremount church. Children performed the play - The Inn-spectors Christmas and did a fantastic job. Each class had their own role at being characters from the play with 1A being travellers, 1B being soldiers, 1C being sheep/shepherds and 1D being stars. All children were excited to get up on stage and sing their classes song. Some children had a specific role and had to say some lines in the play. We had inn-spectors, narrators, inn-keepers, shepherds, wise men, angels, a star, a donkey, Mary, Joseph and soldiers. All children did a brilliant job performing in front of lots of adults and we cannot say well done enough to each and every single child that took part in the nativity. They looked fantastic in their costumes. Thank you to all parents for their support in obtaining costumes. Have a fantastic Christmas!

Thank you,

The Year 1 team.

Year 1 & 2 Hobgoblin, by Miss Gough-Hughes

Date: 4th Dec 2018 @ 11:10am

Year 1 and 2 thoroughly enjoyed their pantomime visit this year. The Hobgoblin came into school today to perform our very own pantomime - The Snow Queen. The children found the performance very funny and particularly enjoyed the references to Wallasey and St George’s. Also, they enjoyed shouting BARRY when they saw him appear on stage. The children shouted so loudly that all of the teachers had to cover their ears. The children enjoyed joining in when they could, making animal noises and learning a little song/chant about what they love. Children will all be doing a follow up of this visit in literacy this week. We hope that all children enjoyed this visit and hope it makes them feel ready for Christmas time.

Road Safety Week , by Miss Gough-Hughes

Date: 25th Nov 2018 @ 10:56am

Road Safety Week

Throughout the week, children at St George’s have been recognising and celebrating road safety week. The focus of road safety week this year was bike safety and how children can stay safe on the roads, especially when riding their bikes. Each class has done some work around bike safety, understanding what is essential when riding bikes: wearing helmets, wearing sensible shoes, having a reflector on the bike, ensuring the bike is the right size etc. Children in foundation stage designed and coloured their own bike to celebrate road safety week. Children in years 1 and 2 investigated what materials would be best to make a bike helmet, discussing how a helmet is strong and sturdy to protect us on the road. Children in years 3 and 4 designed their own reflector which would be suitable to use when riding a bike. They also discussed the importance of reflectors when riding a bike. Children in years 5 and 6 designed and made their own moving vehicle, looking at how bikes move safely. To finish all of the fantastic work the children completed around road safety, we celebrated with a road safety breakfast. Children enjoyed a pastry and drink of juice before school. Well done to all children for participating and working so hard throughout the week. The children are all experts at road safety! Here are some pictures of our road safety breakfast:

Road Safety Week , by Miss Gough-Hughes

Date: 20th Nov 2018 @ 7:34pm

Today, all of Year 1 spent time learning about road safety and why it’s incredibly important. The focus of road safety week this year is, bike safety and how to be safe on the road. Children in Year 1 watched a video to show them the important things to do when riding your bike, including: wearing a helmet to protect your head. As a result, we designed our very own bike helmet and discussed what material we would need to use to ensure it would be sturdy and would protect us. Some designs we completed are found below. Additionally, we conducted a mini experiment using eggs. Firstly, we dropped an egg into a bucket and observed it breaking due to the force and height it was dropped at. We then wrapped our egg in bubble wrap as a protective layer (just like a helmet) and observed how it didn’t smash this time. Children realised that the bubble wrap was just like a helmet for our heads and saw how important helmets are. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed learning about road safety and hope that the children can share what they have learnt with you. Well done Year 1 for learning the importance of road safety!

Chester Zoo , by Miss Gough-Hughes

Date: 9th Nov 2018 @ 2:18pm

Chester Zoo

Year 1 visited Chester Zoo this week. We had a fantastic time and found the whole experience very exciting. First, we got on a big coach, which was very comfortable to sit on. It took us around half an hour to get to the zoo but we did not mind as we spent time looking out of the window and spotting different sights. When we arrived at the zoo, we got a special sticker so that we could go in. In the morning, we all saw lots of different animals including: red pandas, lions, giraffes, owls, penguins, flamingoes, butterflies etc. We found that some animals were asleep and were not out in their inclosures but others were outside, enjoying the fresh air. We particularly enjoyed seeing the lions as the male lion came very close to the fence and even started to stratch his claws on the tree which made us laugh. After seeing lots of animals in the morning, we made our way to the Islands for our dinner. We chatted to our friends and enjoyed having a bit of a rest after lots of walking. We enjoyed having dinner but were even more excited to see different animals. All of a sudden, it started to rain really badly so we all had to walk quite fast to get under shelter. Some classes took cover in the bat cave and others went to see the painted dogs and the rhinos. After, we walked through the rain with our hoods up and made our way back to the coaches. Some of us fell asleep on the coach as we were all exhausted from all of the walking that we did. We found we had walked nearly 5 miles! All teachers were so impressed with how sensible and postive the children were throughout the day. Well done Year 1! Here are some pictures of the animals we saw:

Here is a picture of us before we left the zoo (we were a little wet).

Year 1 forest school , by Miss Gough-Hughes

Date: 10th Oct 2018 @ 4:29pm

Year 1 Forest School

Year 1 have thoroughly enjoyed their first visit to forest school this year. We have been learning about seasons in Science and have continued this learning at forest school. We looked at a weather station which showed us how much rainfall there had been, what the temperature is outside and also how windy it is. Throughout the year, we will continue to monitor our weather station and record our findings to see the change over time. Also, we looked at the trees around forest school and discussed what signs of Autumn we could see. We collected some Autumn coloured leaves and other things which showed us Autumn: conkers. Before we had choosing time, we went on a hunt around the forest to collect various items, that we used to make an Autumn picture. We had a great time at forest school and cannot wait to go back next time to further our learning. Thank you Mrs Pugh and to the parents/carers who helped.

Help for Heroes

Yesterday, children in Year 1 took part in an outdoor assault course in order to raise money for the charity Help for Heroes. We were incredibly proud of how well the children did, going round the course. They ran in and out of cones, jumped over some hurdles, walked across the benches and finally army crawlled underneath some cargo netting. The children raced against one another in teams and both teams did incredibly well, especially considering the heat! A huge well done to all children for completing the course and for fundraising for a fantastic charity. Also, a big thank you to parents for supporting their children in fundraising at home.

Wow Afternoon - Summer term , by Miss Gough-Hughes

Date: 24th Apr 2018 @ 4:10pm

Year 1 Wow Afternoon!

For our Wow afternoon, children in Year 1 dressed up as gardeners in order to celebrate the start of our Summer term topic: plants. Children looked like excellent farmers and we thank parents for getting costumes for the children to wear.

Throughout the afternoon, we did some exciting jobs to do with gardening. We began our afternoon by thinking about what we already know about plants and then also thinking about what we would like to know by the end of the term. Children enjoyed discussing things they already know about plants and sharing this with their friends. We were amazed with how much the children knew! We then went outside and planted our very own bean seed, using soil, a seed and the watering cans that children had brought in. We will continue to water these seeds in school in the hopes that they will grow and children can then bring them home. Next, we were looking around the playground to spot plants and we drew a picture of a plant of our choice and labelled around it. Finally, at the end of the day we had the opportunity to look at different exotic fruit in order to think about where they are grown around the world. Some children even tasted the fruit (if they wanted to). The fruit we looked at were: bananas, strawberries, passion fruit, mango, kiwi and pineapple. Children were excellent at describing what the different fruits looked like and even gave some fantastic guesses as to which countries they were from: We hope that the children continue to enjoy learning about our topic this term and are able to share with you what they have learnt. .

A visit from Leonie Roberts , by Miss Gough-Hughes

Date: 15th Mar 2018 @ 5:18pm

Today, Year 1 received a very special visitor called Leonie Roberts. Leonie is an author and teacher from Liverpool who delivered an assembly to the children. Leonie discussed who she was, where she was from, why she decided to become an author and how long it took her. She then read the children her book called My Colourful Chameleon which the children thoroughly enjoyed. The book had lots of rhyming words in it so the children could easily join in on key parts of the story. We thought of questions in our classes and asked Leonie some of them: Where did you get the idea of the story from? Did you write the story on your own or did someone help you? Why did you decide to use rhyming words in the story? What is your favourite part and why? Leonie inspired children to follow their dreams and work hard to become what they want to be in the future. Year 1 all thoroughly enjoyed hearing the story and will love to share it with you at home.

A huge thank you to Leonie Roberts for coming in and sharing her fantastic story with us!

Science Week , by Miss Gough-Hughes

Date: 12th Mar 2018 @ 3:59pm

Science Week

Today, we spent the afternoon completing a Science experiment in order to celebrate and recognise Science Week in school. 1C and 1D had a challenge to create a mixture that would be suitable to make bubbles and they had to create their own bubble wands using straws and pipe cleaners. Our aim of the bubble experiment was for us to create the BEST bubble. As a class, we discussed what we meant by the word best and came to a decision that the best bubble for us, would mean creating a bubble which lasted the longest and didn't pop straight away. We timed this to ensure it was fair. One bubble lasted 41 seconds! We even tried to make the biggest bubble and realised that the bigger our hole on the bubble wand was, the bigger the bubble was likely to be.

We created our mixture using 6 cups of water, half a cup of cornflour, half a cup of washing up liquid and a tablespoon of baking powder. We predicted whether we thought the bubble mixture would work and then discussed what we found afterwards. We completed a write up of our experiment in our Science books.

Children thoroughly enjoyed this experiment and will more than likely enjoy explaining this experiment at home. Happy Science Week!
