International Women's Day - 2019 , by Miss Gough-Hughes

Date: 8th Mar 2019 @ 4:33pm

Today, we celebrated international women's day. Children discovered some famous female figures such as Marie Curie, Rosa Parks and Jane Austen. We were very impressed with children's attitudes and positvity in learning about why we celebrate international women's day. We discussed how women's rights have changed over time and how women now have the right to vote, work in various job roles and have equal opporunities on a daily basis. We asked children who could play football, guitar or ride a bike? The children's responses were fantastic, showing an excellent awareness of why we celebrate international women's day and how things have changed over time. The Queen has been Year 1's main focus today, talking about her life, achievements and role as Queen. We will be continuing this learning about Kings, Queens and the Royal family throughout this term.

World Book Day - 2019

Year 1 thoroughly enjoyed celebrating World Book Day and dressing up as their favourite character from a book. Some of the characters ranged from Willy Wonker, Mr Men characters, Mary Poppins, Alice in Wonderland and Harry Potter. Children found this day very exciting and loved being able to share their book with their friends and teacher. In the afternoon, children from Year 3 came down to our classrooms and shared their books with the Year 1 children and even read their book to them. The Year 1 children loved working with Year 3 and showed fantastic engagement and interest. A big thank you to Year 3 for coming down to see us! Also, we drew a picture of us dressed up, wrote a sentence to describe who we were and completed a wordsearch with words associated to books. All children looked fantastic and had a brilliant day celebrating World Book Day!

Nathan Young visiting Year 2, by Mrs Horton

Date: 1st Mar 2019 @ 3:58pm

This term the  learning hero in year 2 is Nathan Young.

Nathan is an ex pupil of St George’s who is profoundly deaf. He has worked extremely hard to overcome any difficulties that he has been faced with and is now an international swimmer who has represented Great Britain in the Deaf Swimming World Championships and the Deaflympics, in which he won a bronze medal.

In an inspirational presentation, Nathan explained his journey to the children. He is such a fantastic role model who left the children feeling very positive and inspired.

Nathan is now training 20 hours a week to represent Great Britain in the Deaf World Swimming Championships in Brazil, this summer. He will be the only athlete from GB and will have to fund the trip himself. The children in year 2 would like to support him and will discuss next week what they can do to help with the fundraising.

High Impact - Year 1, by Miss Gough-Hughes

Date: 5th Mar 2018 @ 4:13pm

Learning to code

This week, the whole of year one enjoyed a few hours learning how to code with High Impact. Children used IPADS, moveable robots and board games in order to learn what coding is and how to begin coding technology. We had fun trying out all of the different coding apps on the IPADS and being able to control a robot, using technology. One of the apps involved the children manipulating shapes into different positions to form an image. The IPAD had a special attachement on the top which could see what the children were doing and how they were moving their shapes. Another piece of equipment was called a code-pillar where children would add different attachements to the code-pillar, which would enable it to turn in different directions. The children also thoroughly enjoyed playing a coding board game, where they had to choose the correct card in order to move their turtle to collect their coloured jewel. We look forward to continuing this learning throughout the year and learning more about IPADS and coding. Thank you to High Impact for this fantastic afternoon session and we hope the children all really enjoyed this activity!

Art Day - 1A & 1C, by Miss Gough-Hughes

Date: 11th Feb 2019 @ 4:27pm

Year 1 Art Day - 1A & 1C

Today both 1A and 1C took part in an art day with a visitng artist, Ian Fennelly. As an introduction to our Royal topic next term, we made a King or Queen sculpture, using the milk bottles you provided. The children thoroughly enjoyed their day and learnt about how to create simple sculptures using a range of resources and materials including: pipe cleaners, beads, masking tape, watery PVA, pom poms and polystyrene balls. The children worked in twos or threes to complete their sculpture and showed excellent teamwork skills throughout the day. We began the day by covering the milk bottle in masking tape and ensuring there were no gaps. We then created a neck and stuck the sculpture onto the base. After that, we used watered down glue to cover the sculpture in coloured tissue paper for the skin. Next, we made eyes, a mouth, jewelerry, hair and a crown to finish our Kings and Queens. Well done to all children in 1A and 1C for concentrating so hard, helping their friends and working so well in their little groups. The Kings and Queens all look fabulous on display in the hall. Please find some pictures of our completed sculptures below.
