Topsite Eco Warriors Dive into Action at Blue Planet Aquarium!
What a splash! Our Year 5 and 6 Eco Team recently traded the classroom for the coastline as they embarked on a high-stakes mission to the Blue Planet Aquarium. It wasn't just a day out; it was a deep dive into the front lines of marine conservation.
One of the most rewarding tasks of the day was getting hands-on with animal enrichment. Did you know fish need to stay entertained too? Our Eco Team spent the morning carefully preparing enrichment ropes by attaching lettuce and broccoli. These are designed to keep the fish active, curious, and mimicking their natural behaviours in the wild.
But the real science began when the team became water quality experts. Using specialised kits, the students tested the pH balance of various water samples. They quickly discovered that for our finned friends, the "perfect" water chemistry is a matter of life or death! It was a brilliant way to see how different nutrients and minerals keep the aquarium inhabitants safe and healthy.
As the lunch hour approached, it was time for the residents of the aquarium to eat. Our students were given the incredible responsibility of feeding different types of fish, learning about the specific diets required for various species.
After lunch, our eagle-eyed students took to the trails for a nature walk. Armed with curiosity, they hunted for mini-beasts, learning how even the smallest creatures on land play a massive role in our ecosystem.
The excitement reached fever pitch as the group gathered at the main tank to watch the professional divers feed the sharks. Seeing these majestic predators up close (and watching the courage of the divers) was a moment nobody will forget! One of the divers, Charlie, is the son of our minibus driver - Pete!
The highlight of the day was a journey through the famous underwater tunnel. As the sharks and rays glided overhead, the students got to see their hard work in action. The divers submerged into the tank, carrying the very enrichment ropes the Eco Team had made earlier that morning!
To wrap up the "fin-tastic" day, the divers climbed out of the water and headed straight to our students for an exclusive Q&A session. Our Eco Team grilled the experts with brilliant questions about: their favourite kind of shark, how to stop plastic pollution, and what are the easiest/most difficult fish to feed.
All in all, it was a brilliant day. Our Eco Warriors returned to school with inspired minds and a passion for protecting our oceans. A huge thank you to Lynn and Blue Planet Aquarium for this amazing opportunity!
