Year 5 & 6 plan to Engage in Lively Debate with Headteacher on Smartphone-Free Schools

Our Year 5 and 6 pupils recently participated in a thought-provoking launch discussion with Headteacher Mr. Cassidy about the growing movement towards smartphone-free schools and the broader concept of a smartphone-free childhood. The assembly, held in the school hall, saw staff and pupils exploring the process to build up to our debate next half term.

The launch discussion explored various aspects of the topic, including the potential benefits of a smartphone-free environment in schools, such as improved concentration, increased social interaction, and reduced cyberbullying. Pupils also raised important points about the potential drawbacks, including the use of smartphones for educational purposes and communication with parents.

Mr. Cassidy has encouraged pupils to go away and build their evidence and to consider their point of view and how they might put their points across when we come back to debate.

This debate will provide a valuable opportunity for our older primary students to develop their understanding of a significant contemporary issue and to practice expressing their opinions in a respectful and articulate manner. It also underscores the school's commitment to fostering critical thinking and open dialogue among our pupils.

For those interested in learning more about the initiatives we are discussing , you can explore the following resources:

  • Smartphone Free Schools: This movement advocates for the creation of learning environments where smartphones are not permitted, aiming to enhance focus and well-being.
  • Smartphone Free Childhood:This grassroots movement encourages a childhood less reliant on smartphones, promoting outdoor play, face-to-face interaction, and other developmental activities.

The school will continue to explore these important discussions, including our families and community, and consider the perspectives shared by our students as we move forward.
