Peninsula Multi Academy Trust (PMAT) Consultation - September 2025

In June, we informed you of the Governing Body’s intention to consult regarding the possibility of St George’s Primary School joining the Peninsula Academy Trust (PMAT) with Weatherhead and Liscard Primary School.  This would be a significant and important step for our school.

Parent and carer feedback is an important aspect of our decision-making.

In this page we have provided key documents to explain the reasons why we are considering this change.  We have sought to explain the potential benefits and what it may mean for your child’s education.    As well as the detail below there is:

  • A question and answer document shared below.
  • Invitation for parents and carers to attend a meeting with governors, Mr Cassidy and Mr Mackenzie as the CEO of the Peninsula Trust on Thursday 11th September at 5.30pm in Upper Site main hall (on Claremount Road).
  • Invitation for you to share your feedback via our online survey or by e-mailing consultation@stgeorges.wirral.sch.uk.

Why are St George’s Considering Joining Peninsula Multi Academy Trust?

The most important reason for us exploring joining the Peninsula Multi Academy Trust is that it would create a community-based trust that connects local schools serving the families of Wallasey.    Increasingly schools are having to solve complex challenges to ensure high quality education and care for our pupils.  Working a strong community of school would help us to do this better whilst ensuring that we are focused on the needs of our local community.

As a founder school in the MAT with Weatherhead and Liscard Primary School we can shape how the trust would work and develop a trust that would be of great benefit to our local community.

What is an Academy and a Multi-Academy Trust (MAT)?

Academies are state-funded schools that are independent of local authority control.  A Multi-Academy Trust (MAT) is a group of schools working together under a shared governance structure to deliver high-quality education.  They have greater freedom over their curriculum, finances and governance.   Parents and carers can find out more about Academy Trusts and how they work on the .gov.uk website page.

Why Are We Considering This Change?

Our Governing Body has identified several reasons for exploring academy status within a MAT:

  1. Enhanced Support: Collaborating with other schools in a MAT can provide access to shared resources, expertise and professional development opportunities for staff.  It will also improve our capacity because we will be tackling key challenges together.
  2. Financial Stability: MATs can achieve economies of scale, allowing for more efficient use of funding, access to additional funding and expertise.
  3. Curriculum Innovation: Becoming an academy would provide greater flexibility to tailor teaching to meet our pupils' needs.
  4. Community Focus: Partnering with a MAT that shares our values can strengthen our commitment to providing excellent education within our local community.

What Will Not Change?

  • The school will remain free to attend and non-selective.
  • We will continue to follow national admissions arrangements, and our admissions policy will remain the same.
  • Our ethos and values will remain at the heart of everything we do.
  • The school name, badge, uniform and staff will not change.
  • We will continue to have a strong local governing body and school leadership team.
