Year 1 Phonics Screening , by Miss Gough-Hughes

Dear Year 1 parents,
As you may be aware from parents evening and letters sent home, Year 1 children have their phonics screening test coming up (week beggining 11th June). This is a test whereby children will come and read some real words and some alien words (nonsense words) with their class teacher. If you would like more information about what this test entails, we have a parents event being held at 5pm on Monday 14th May.

Thank you to everyone who came along to the year 1 and 2 reading breakfast at Wallasey Village Library this morning.

Mini Olympics fun, by Mrs Walters

Well done to all the children who attended a multi sports/mini Olympics session at our upper site last week.
The event was organised by the Wallasey Cluster and saw children from other schools spending the afternoon taking part in lots of different events.
Everyone had a great time and a big thank you must also go to the year 5 pupils who were a great help on the day - Lily, Zoe, Lloyd and Freddie.

We had an amazing St George’s Day parade today - thank you to everyone who came and cheered us on, waved flags, clapped and joined in the fun.
The children looked fantastic in red and white with their flags, hats and shields and we were joined by the mini police, mini dragons and George our dragon as well as our brave crusader St George!

Year 1 Wow Afternoon!
For our Wow afternoon, children in Year 1 dressed up as gardeners in order to celebrate the start of our Summer term topic: plants. Children looked like excellent farmers and we thank parents for getting costumes for the children to wear.
Throughout the afternoon, we did some exciting jobs to do with gardening. We began our afternoon by thinking about what we already know about plants and then also thinking about what we would like to know by the end of the term. Children enjoyed discussing things they already know about plants and sharing this with their friends. We were amazed with how much the children knew! We then went outside and planted our very own bean seed, using soil, a seed and the watering cans that children had brought in. We will continue to water these seeds in school in the hopes that they will grow and children can then bring them home. Next, we were looking around the playground to spot plants and we drew a picture of a plant of our choice and labelled around it. Finally, at the end of the day we had the opportunity to look at different exotic fruit in order to think about where they are grown around the world. Some children even tasted the fruit (if they wanted to). The fruit we looked at were: bananas, strawberries, passion fruit, mango, kiwi and pineapple. Children were excellent at describing what the different fruits looked like and even gave some fantastic guesses as to which countries they were from: We hope that the children continue to enjoy learning about our topic this term and are able to share with you what they have learnt. .
Mini Police Poppy planting, by Mrs Walters

Our fabulous mini police took part in a poppy planting event at Merseyside Police HQ to remember the officers who died in the First World War.
The event was planned to commemorate the Centenary by breathing new life into the boundary of Police HQ at Canning Place with 25,000 poppies planted by local school children.

Mini Police Thank You, by Mrs Walters

Our mini police were very pleased to receive a thank you letter from the police today regarding their hard work before Easter.
The children and the police took part in a campaign looking at parking and speeding around both sites. Parents and local residents were very supportive of the initiative and we hope to run it again.

6B thoroughly enjoyed their attendance party today. They made fruit kebabs dipped in chocolate, drank milkshake, had a visit from the Easter Bunny and played some outdoor games.
Year 2 Assessment meeting for parents, by Mrs Horton

The Year 2 assessment meeting for parents will take place in the school hall tonight at 5pm. For those parents unable to attend the powerpoint is available on the year 2 page of the school website. The meeting is to explain statutory assessments for children at the end of Key Stage One.

Author visit and book signing, by Mrs Walters

We had a very successful visit from author Josh Lacey today. He spoke at several assemblies and did some wonderful workshops for our year 3 children.
The children loved his Dragon stories and the book sale and signing after school were a great success. We do have a few more books in school if anyone would like to buy a copy before the Easter holidays.

Author Visit - Josh Lacey Friday 23rd March, by Mrs Horton

Author Josh Lacey is vsiting years 2-4 tomorrow. He is author of the fabulous Dragon Sitter Books and A Dog Called GRK.
Books will be available for sale after school in the lower site school hall. Please come along and have a look. All books will be signed by Josh.
Any children who go to after school clubs can order via the pre order from or bring their money to school tomorrow in an envelope. The Dragonsitter books are £4.99 and the GRK books are £6.99.

British Science Week ran from the 9th - 18th March 2018. This year, the theme was 'Exploration and Discovery'. To celebrate, Year 3 teamed up with Year 4 to run a successful science fair! Throughout the day, children had the chance to take part in lots of different experiements and activities that tested their scientific minds!

Mini Police Parking Operation Success, by Mrs Walters

Our mini police had a very successful morning working with local police officers today as part of their parking operation.
Last week they targeted upper site at the end of the day but today lower site was under scrutiny at the start of the school day.
Several drivers were warned over parking and others were stopped for speeding. Most chose to face the mini police court rather than have a fine.
Parents were very pleased to see the police on patrol at school and we hope they will be back soon.
Basketball Success, by Mrs Walters

Congratulations to the year 3 and 4 children who took part in a basketball competition today at Mount Primary School.
The children competed against pupils from four other schools, coming second overall and their behaviour and attitude were brilliant as always. Well done!

ST George's Primary School Hosts Pilot Maths TRG (Teacher Research Group), by Mrs Chambers

St George's Primary were excited to host their pilot Teacher Reasearch Group on Tuesday 6th March. Three schools sent delegates - Sommerville Primary School, Heswall Primary School and St Vincent De Paul Roman Catholic Primary School. The teachers and leaders who attended are taking part in a national, government funded initiative, to develop the teaching of mathematics following a mastery curriculum. The morning was very successful and the delegates all commented on the tenacity, resilience and independence of the St George's children they worked with.
A visit from Leonie Roberts , by Miss Gough-Hughes

Today, Year 1 received a very special visitor called Leonie Roberts. Leonie is an author and teacher from Liverpool who delivered an assembly to the children. Leonie discussed who she was, where she was from, why she decided to become an author and how long it took her. She then read the children her book called My Colourful Chameleon which the children thoroughly enjoyed. The book had lots of rhyming words in it so the children could easily join in on key parts of the story. We thought of questions in our classes and asked Leonie some of them: Where did you get the idea of the story from? Did you write the story on your own or did someone help you? Why did you decide to use rhyming words in the story? What is your favourite part and why? Leonie inspired children to follow their dreams and work hard to become what they want to be in the future. Year 1 all thoroughly enjoyed hearing the story and will love to share it with you at home.
A huge thank you to Leonie Roberts for coming in and sharing her fantastic story with us!
