Re: Nominations for Parent Governor Role

Would you like to help with the improvement and leadership of our school?

Due to the retirement of 3 long-serving governors, we have three vacancies available in our Governing Body.

We asked our departing governors to share their feelings on their work as a governor before we commenced with our elections.

What Does the Role Involve?

Each school has their own Governing Body.

We are asking for nominations for parent governor by Monday 28^th of September.

The term of office of all governors, with the exception of the head teacher, is four years.

What Do Our Governors Do?

School governors have important responsibilities for the overall conduct and development of the school. Information about how our Governing Body works is on the school website’s Governing Body page.
Governors’ role is clearly defined by the Department of Education. DfE Governance Guide can be read online.
We have different committees to improve the way that we work. Governors will be asked to work with senior leaders in the school in specific areas of strength or interest. These include:

Personnel and HR
Equality
Data and standards
Curriculum
Safeguarding
Special Needs and Disability
Buildings and Premises Buildings,
Finance,
Health and Safety
Community Involvement

Governors attend a few meetings every term (normally in the evenings) and work with senior leaders in specific areas on aspects of school improvement and policy.
Governors are central to the strategic development of the school. This includes decisions regarding budgets and how we ensure that senior leaders are accountable for the performance of the school.

The views of parents and the skills that they can bring are of great value to our Governing Body. All governors, including parent governors, are valued for their contribution to the life of the school.

What Are the Expectations of Parent Governors?

All governors bring something different to our Governing Body. We are looking for governors who have skills, interests or experience in any of the aspects listed above.

Our current parent governors say that on average you need to able to commit a minimum of 8 to 12 hours a school term to attend meetings, read papers, undertake school visits etc.
That you undertake basic training and induction
You are interested in children and education
That you are a positive and open-minded person, who enjoys working with others.
Confidentiality and discretion.

How Will the School Support Me in My Role?

Ensure a full induction and a governor mentor to help you adjust to the role
We are a positive, friendly and welcoming group. There will be a lot of support.
Access to high quality online training and impartial advice.
Face to face training opportunities to help you develop and understand how the school works.
We will also offer you:

A chance to contribute to the improvement of our local school.
A chance to develop new skills
Tea, coffee, biscuits and a friendly welcome

Do Parent Governors Enjoy the Role?

Most parent governors have loved their role. However, some find that the time commitment and role is demanding. It is important that you research the role and consider the commitments before applying.

How Do You Apply to be a Parent Governor?

You can complete the application form. This was attached in the e-mail, or you collect a form from the school office in person or you can download it from the school website:
Form must have details and signatures of two parents or carers from our community willing to nominate you for the position.

Candidates are asked to complete the form and supply, in not more than 150 words, a note on their background and interests.

All forms must be returned to the school office by 9.00am on Monday 28^th September 2026
In the event of more than one nomination, it will be necessary to hold an election. We will contact you about this process.

All successful applicants are vetted using enhanced DBS checks and asked to complete safeguarding training role before commencing their role.
