Topsite Changemakers

This afternoon, our Year 5 Eco Councillors met with Mr Cassidy to talk through their current Geography unit (fieldwork: how can we investigate the sustainability of our school?) and how we can implement positive changes from their findings.

Ellie introduced the meeting and explained why we were all here: to save our school money, improve our carbon emissions and create a clean source of energy.

First, Charlie spoke about what the fieldwork cycle entails and which stage we were currently demonstrating - communicating our findings.

Then, Yaamanan discussed our questions about solar energy and hypotheses for where we think might be the best location to place more solar panels on our school grounds.

Next, Aria discussed the data collection process. Each location was ranked based on sunlight availability, space and land use. The Sports Hall roof seemed to be the highest ranking area across all classes!

After that, Mallakai spoke about the results found and displayed in their bar charts.

Finally, Hudson shared Year 5's conclusion that either the Sports Hall roof or near reception may be the best locations for more solar panels, but that we would need to investigate Lower Site to also find their best locations too.

The children really enjoyed sharing their hard work from their Geography unit and cannot wait to make some positive changes to our school grounds! Well done, Eco Council.

Watch this space for further developments!
