Y6 Eco Team - Wild About Marine 2026
Our fantastic Year 6 Eco Team traded the classroom for the beautiful shores of Thurstaston recently to take part in the action-packed Wild About Marine day. It was an incredible, hands-on day of learning, conservation, and creativity, where our pupils showed just how passionate they are about protecting our planet.
From saving marine life to meeting local VIPs, here is a look at their busy day by the sea!
The day kicked off with plenty of outdoor action as the team explored the beach and put their eco-skills to the test:
-
Beach Litter Pick: Equipped with grabbers and bags, the team combed the beach to clear away harmful rubbish, making the coastline instantly safer for local wildlife.
-
Seaside Scavenger Hunt: Pupils looked closely at the coastal environment, hunting for natural treasures and learning about the delicate ecosystem of the beach.
-
Life-Saving Skills: In a thrilling workshop with the Marine Conservation Society, the children practised a mock rescue of life-sized inflatable seals and dolphins, learning exactly what to do if a marine animal gets into trouble on our shores.
The education continued off the sand with some brilliant workshops run by local experts, plus a very special introduction:
-
Weaving with Twigtwisters: The children tapped into their artistic sides by learning the ancient craft of willow weaving, creating beautiful, sustainable willow fish to take home.
-
Meeting the Mayor: Our Eco Team was delighted to meet the Mayor, Councillor Mary Jordan, who chatted with the children about their environmental efforts and commended them for representing our school so brilliantly.
-
Wirral Fox Rescue: Moving from the sea to the land, the team met with experts to learn all about local fox habitats and how we can peacefully coexist with these clever urban neighbors.
The core message of the day was sustainability, and the team came back bursting with new ideas to implement back at school:
"My absolute favourite part was learning about rainwater gardens with United Utilities," said one of our Year 6 Eco Team members. "We learned how clever planting can stop flooding and keep our rivers clean. We really want to make one at school now!"
The children also took part in interactive sessions focusing on the golden rules of sustainability: Recycling, Reusing, and Repurposing. They learned how items we usually throw away can be given a brand-new lease on life, reducing waste and protecting our oceans from plastic pollution.
A huge thank you to all the amazing organisations who made the Wild About Marine day such a success. Our Year 6 pupils were fantastic ambassadors for our school, proving that the future of our local environment is in very safe hands.
Pictures to follow!
