Year 1-4 Royal Institution - science show

Children in Years 1–4 enjoyed an exciting visit from the Royal Institution, taking part in their Explosive Food science show. Packed with fun demonstrations, the session showed how science links to everyday life, especially the food we eat.

A highlight was the jelly baby experiment, which revealed how much energy is stored in food and how it fuels our bodies. Children also learned about taste buds and how DNA can affect how we experience flavours, such as why some people find sprouts bitter.

The importance of a balanced diet was explored, including:

  • Proteins for growth and repair
  • Carbohydrates for energy
  • Vitamins and minerals, like iron, to keep us healthy

The show also touched on real-world issues, such as methane from cows and alternative protein sources like insects.

Fun demonstrations helped explain digestion, from enzymes in saliva to how nutrients are absorbed in the intestines. Other highlights included fizzy drink reactions.

This engaging show supported key science topics and sparked curiosity and enthusiasm in all the children. A big thank you to the Royal Institution for such a memorable experience for our children.
