Year 5 Takes On The Philharmonic

From the classroom to the concert hall, our Year 5 students swapped their pens for programs as they embarked on an unforgettable cultural journey to the world-renowned Liverpool Philharmonic Hall.

The air was thick with excitement as the children lined up outside the iconic art deco building. Having visited last year, this was a further experience inside one of the UK’s most prestigious musical venues, and the grand architecture did not disappoint.

Once settled into the plush red seats of the auditorium, the students were treated to an immersive orchestral performance designed to bring classical music to life. The program featured a dynamic range of pieces, from thunderous percussion that rattled the floorboards to delicate woodwind melodies that hushed the entire room.

Throughout the concert, the Year 5s were praised by staff and venue stewards alike for their impeccable behavior and attentive listening. They didn't just watch the music; they engaged with it — identifying different instrument families and feeling the rhythmic energy of a live professional orchestra.

Highlights of the Trip:

  • The "Wall of Sound": The sheer power of the full orchestra playing in unison left the students in awe.

  • Instrument Spotting: Putting their classroom knowledge to the test by picking out the oboes, cellos, and French horns from the crowd.

  • A Grand Venue: Marveling at the unique "shuttle" rising from the stage and the incredible acoustics of the hall.

"It was a fantastic opportunity for the children to see that music isn't just something you hear on a speaker; it’s a living, breathing performance," said Mrs Field-Baines. "Seeing their faces light up during the crescendo was a real highlight of the performance."

The trip has sparked a new wave of musical enthusiasm back at school, with many students now eager to explore new instruments. We are incredibly proud of how our Year 5s represented St George’s in the heart of Liverpool’s cultural district.
