British Science Week 1A and 1B, by Miss Barlow

Date: 12th Mar 2018 @ 2:29pm

British science week in 1A and 1B!

Our investigation was to help escape the figurine from the ice and our big question was - 'what is the quickest way to melt ice?'

We started our afternoon by using a hook, looking at a picture of ice. We discussed that ice is formed by freezing the liquid water. We also discussed that freezing point has to be 0 degrees. We predicted that the quickest way to melt ice could be using heat like sunlight or a fire. We realised we didn't have that equipment in our classrooms so instead melted our ice in groups by providing it with heat from our hands and insulation. We discovered that ice does need heat to help it melt. We freed our figurines and had a really fun afternoon!!

Well done to 1A and 1B for working so hard!

Hi-impact , by Miss Barlow

Date: 5th Mar 2018 @ 11:18am

Hi Impact session in 1A!

This morning in 1A we had a very exciting morning with Mr Griffiths. We had a go at using robots and lots of different apps using our school iPads. We had a fantastic morning programming, computing and coding and learnt lots of new ways to control games and bots. We got to use bluebots and ozobots! The programming was brilliant as we had to problem solve which helps us with our mathematical thinking and thinking logically. I was blown away with the children's outstanding reasoning and problem solving. Mr Griffiths even gave us some challenges to make it harder for us each time which we enjoyed because we applied our ICT skills. We had such a fun morning we didn't even want to go outside to play!!

Thank you very much Mr Griffiths!!!

Wall Of Fame , by Miss Gough-Hughes

Date: 2nd Mar 2018 @ 4:02pm

In Year 1, we have placed importance on celebrating children's work. In doing so we have created a display in the hall so the children can be proud of the work and achievements they have acquired. We have opted to focus on the core subjects - English, Maths and Science. We will be regularly updating the Wall Of Fame so each child at some point has their work recognised.

Attached is a picture of this weeks.

Thank you for your continued support,

The Year 1 Team

World Book Day, by Miss Gough-Hughes

Date: 1st Mar 2018 @ 4:15pm

Children discussed who they were dressed up as and shared their book with children in their classes. Year 1 also had the chance to pair up with a child from Year 3, sharing their books with eachother and reading them aloud. Children really enjoyed their day and got to share lots of different books with their friends and adults. We then finished our day by drawing a picture of us in our costume and writing about our costume/ book and why we chose it.

Happy World Book Day!

Road Safety week, by Miss Gough-Hughes

Date: 24th Nov 2017 @ 4:23pm

Road Safety week

As a school, we have been promoting road safety week and the importance of children using the roads safely. We have discussed how we cross the roads safely, using the different types of crossings and discussed how it is important to stop, look and listen when we cross the road. Children also looked at how they could stay safe if they were using equipment such as a scooter near to the road and how they could stay safe in moving vehicles e.g. always wearing their seatbelt and encouraging others to do the same. Children took part in a little in school competition where they drew their own version of the red and/or green man. Some of the children's examples have been uploaded. It would be useful if children could continue this discussion of how they can be safe on or near roads at home and even design their own green/red man again, if they would like to.

Anti-Bullying week, by Miss Gough-Hughes

Date: 24th Nov 2017 @ 4:11pm

Anti-Bullying Week

This week, the children have been thinking about what the word bullying means. Children have been talking about our school rules and how they keep us safe and try to ensure that we do not hurt or upset other people's feelings or that other people do not hurt or upset us. Children have discussed what they think would be bullying and how they could instead show kindness to their friends and family at all times. Children have also been encouraged to think about how they could help their friends if they thought their friends were being bullied in school. This week, to raise awareness for anti-bullying week, all year 1 children have created their own anti-bullying poster. We will to continue to spread awareness for anti-bullying and remind children to be kind to their friends and family. .

Slow Down for Bobby , by Miss Gough-Hughes

Date: 27th Sep 2017 @ 2:13pm

Slow Down for Bobby!

Today St George's Primary School have been fortunate enough to get a visit from the Liverpool based writer and storyteller, Jude Lennon. Jude Lennon informed children of the importance of road safety and told the sad yet inspiring story of a young boy named Bobby. Jude read the children a story called SuperBob which the children loved taking part in, doing actions to represent the importance of slowing down and sticking to the 20MPH speed limit near schools. The children have been set a special job, telling all of their friends and family about always slowing down for the 20MPH speed limit and how children can keep themselves safe when walking near the road. Jude taught the children the following sayings: 'I'm thinking about how to be safe on the roads' and 'slow down, everyone'. The children thouroughly enjoyed Jude's visit and have learnt some valuable lessons regarding road safety. A huge thank you to Jude Lennon and The Bobby Colleran Trust for teaching such a valuable lesson.
