KIER and ARUP , by Miss Hughes

Date: 27th Nov 2019 @ 2:57pm

The last three weeks Year 5 have been participating in exciting STEM workshops lead by KIER and ARUP. We have learnt all about careers in engineering, design and construction. We got to learn all about the different jobs and how important they are when designing and building different structures. We also got to experience what it would be like to drive an engineering truck (as well as wear the hard hats)!

In our construction workshop, we challenged ourselves to create the most stable structure using only some simple objects like spaghetti, cello tape, string and marshmallows. We worked in groups with some of the team and discussed the shape of the foundations of the building, what materials were best to use as well as design.

A big, big thank you to the team, for a thoroughly enjoyable 3 weeks.

Year 5 team.

In Key Stage 2, the Year 3 pupils used shapes to draw a variety of forms such as people, dogs, elephants and owls. Year 4 created watercolour paintings of overlapping shapes and applied the watercolour skills they had been practising in class. Year 5 presented their nets they had made in DT and Year 6 made tesselating collages! Thank you to everyone who came to support the event! We hope you enjoy the photographs!

During our history lessons we have been learning about different types of transport from the 1930's up to present day.

On our trip, we experienced 4 types of modern day transport. We walked to the train station, took the train to Liverpool, and to get back to school we went on the Dazzle Ferry and a coach.

While we were in Liverpool, we visited the Liverpool Museum where we had lots of fun learning about many different modes of transport through time.

Here are a few photographs from our day.

2A and 2B D&T day, by Miss Gough-Hughes

Date: 21st Nov 2019 @ 7:59am

This week, the children in both classes made their own moving vehicle as part of our D&T learning. Throughout Autumn 1, we have been looking at the Dazzle ship and how to create different dazzle patterns, using elements of tints and tones from our art learning. We began the day by sealing our boxes and then using our dazzle designs to cover our box fully. We glue on a triangle insert which would keep our axle in place and then used a ruler to measure the width of our boxes, to know how long we need to cut the dowel to make our axles. The children were very confident at measuring in cm's, using a ruler and marking their number with a line. Then, using the saw, the children cut their wooden axles, using glue to attach one of the wheels to the end. Once this had dried, we put the axles through the holders and glued on the wheel to the other end. The final step was to let it dry and then we tested and evaluated our final product. Overall, the children were really happy with what they had produced and suggested some excellent things they could change if they were to make it again. Well done 2A and 2B!

6A Maths Workshop, by Mrs Taylor

Date: 15th Nov 2019 @ 3:04pm

Year 6 were treated to an outdoor maths workshop today with students from Mosslands. Amazingly, we measured the height of the sports hall by making isosceles right-angled triangles. 6A think that the sports hall is 10.71m tall. We’re looking forward to finding out the answer soon.

6D Maths Workshop , by Miss Newton

Date: 15th Nov 2019 @ 2:17pm

We have had some very special visitors this afternoon. Some sixth students from Mosslands have been in to help us to measure the height of our sports hall. We had to carefully make isosceles triangles  to help us calculate how many sheets of paper away it was from us. Then we used the equation (paper x height) divided by 10 to find the mean. Our answer told us that it should be approximately 11.06m tall.

We then created a drawing of a person using kites, circles, squares and rectangles. Here are a few photos of the process and our first drafts!
