Mini Police Parking Operation Success, by Mrs Walters

Our mini police had a very successful morning working with local police officers today as part of their parking operation.
Last week they targeted upper site at the end of the day but today lower site was under scrutiny at the start of the school day.
Several drivers were warned over parking and others were stopped for speeding. Most chose to face the mini police court rather than have a fine.
Parents were very pleased to see the police on patrol at school and we hope they will be back soon.
Basketball Success, by Mrs Walters

Congratulations to the year 3 and 4 children who took part in a basketball competition today at Mount Primary School.
The children competed against pupils from four other schools, coming second overall and their behaviour and attitude were brilliant as always. Well done!

ST George's Primary School Hosts Pilot Maths TRG (Teacher Research Group), by Mrs Chambers

St George's Primary were excited to host their pilot Teacher Reasearch Group on Tuesday 6th March. Three schools sent delegates - Sommerville Primary School, Heswall Primary School and St Vincent De Paul Roman Catholic Primary School. The teachers and leaders who attended are taking part in a national, government funded initiative, to develop the teaching of mathematics following a mastery curriculum. The morning was very successful and the delegates all commented on the tenacity, resilience and independence of the St George's children they worked with.
A visit from Leonie Roberts , by Miss Gough-Hughes

Today, Year 1 received a very special visitor called Leonie Roberts. Leonie is an author and teacher from Liverpool who delivered an assembly to the children. Leonie discussed who she was, where she was from, why she decided to become an author and how long it took her. She then read the children her book called My Colourful Chameleon which the children thoroughly enjoyed. The book had lots of rhyming words in it so the children could easily join in on key parts of the story. We thought of questions in our classes and asked Leonie some of them: Where did you get the idea of the story from? Did you write the story on your own or did someone help you? Why did you decide to use rhyming words in the story? What is your favourite part and why? Leonie inspired children to follow their dreams and work hard to become what they want to be in the future. Year 1 all thoroughly enjoyed hearing the story and will love to share it with you at home.

Year 5 and 6 parents, careers and grandparents were treated to a Science Fair at upper site today. The parents were invited in to see the wide variety of experiments the pupils have been involved with this term.
These ranged from finding out why jelly won't set with pineapple in to experiments with teabags and toothpaste and bridge building.

The mini police had a great afternoon today with local police officers carrying out a parking operation outside upper site.
Some of the children were able to use the police speed gun to check up on passing drivers while others were part of a mini police court speaking to drivers who may have been driving or parking dangerously, including one driver who was speeding at over 40 miles an hour.
All the children were able to sit in the police van and spent time asking the officers different questions.
Several parents commented that it was good to see a police presence and hoped the children would make a difference. They will be holding another parking operation next week at lower site.

Science Week
Today, we spent the afternoon completing a Science experiment in order to celebrate and recognise Science Week in school. 1C and 1D had a challenge to create a mixture that would be suitable to make bubbles and they had to create their own bubble wands using straws and pipe cleaners. Our aim of the bubble experiment was for us to create the BEST bubble. As a class, we discussed what we meant by the word best and came to a decision that the best bubble for us, would mean creating a bubble which lasted the longest and didn't pop straight away. We timed this to ensure it was fair. One bubble lasted 41 seconds! We even tried to make the biggest bubble and realised that the bigger our hole on the bubble wand was, the bigger the bubble was likely to be.
We created our mixture using 6 cups of water, half a cup of cornflour, half a cup of washing up liquid and a tablespoon of baking powder. We predicted whether we thought the bubble mixture would work and then discussed what we found afterwards. We completed a write up of our experiment in our Science books.
Children thoroughly enjoyed this experiment and will more than likely enjoy explaining this experiment at home. Happy Science Week!

British science week in 1A and 1B!
Our investigation was to help escape the figurine from the ice and our big question was - 'what is the quickest way to melt ice?'
We started our afternoon by using a hook, looking at a picture of ice. We discussed that ice is formed by freezing the liquid water. We also discussed that freezing point has to be 0 degrees. We predicted that the quickest way to melt ice could be using heat like sunlight or a fire. We realised we didn't have that equipment in our classrooms so instead melted our ice in groups by providing it with heat from our hands and insulation. We discovered that ice does need heat to help it melt. We freed our figurines and had a really fun afternoon!!

On Fridays when year 4 are at top site can parents please make sure they pick their chidren up promptly. The children finish at 3.15 to allow parents to collect at upper site and then go to lower site for any younger siblings.

Gymnastics Easter Egg Hunt, by Mrs Walters

New Brighton Gymnastics Club will be holding an easter Egg Hunt and Fun Day to fundraise for the Junior World Championships in America.
Several St George's pupils have made it to the championships and the club would love to see as many pupils at the fun day as possible.

Hi Impact session in 1A!
This morning in 1A we had a very exciting morning with Mr Griffiths. We had a go at using robots and lots of different apps using our school iPads. We had a fantastic morning programming, computing and coding and learnt lots of new ways to control games and bots. We got to use bluebots and ozobots! The programming was brilliant as we had to problem solve which helps us with our mathematical thinking and thinking logically. I was blown away with the children's outstanding reasoning and problem solving. Mr Griffiths even gave us some challenges to make it harder for us each time which we enjoyed because we applied our ICT skills. We had such a fun morning we didn't even want to go outside to play!!

Wall Of Fame , by Miss Gough-Hughes

In Year 1, we have placed importance on celebrating children's work. In doing so we have created a display in the hall so the children can be proud of the work and achievements they have acquired. We have opted to focus on the core subjects - English, Maths and Science. We will be regularly updating the Wall Of Fame so each child at some point has their work recognised.

World Book Day, by Miss Gough-Hughes

Today, Year 1 celebrated World Book Day, dressing up as a character from one of their favourite books. Well done to all of the children and parents who did such a great job with their costumes. Children discussed who they were dressed up as and shared their book with children in their classes. Year 1 also had the chance to pair up with a child from Year 3, sharing their books with eachother and reading them aloud. Children really enjoyed their day and got to share lots of different books with their friends and adults. We then finished our day by drawing a picture of us in our costume and writing about our costume/ book and why we chose it.

World Book Day in Year 3!, by Miss Jones

What an excellent World Book Day Year 3 have had! A huge well done to all of the children who participated by dressing up as a character from a book or bringing their favourite story in.
This year's theme was Share A Story. Our Year 3 children did a marvellous job of sharing a story with children from Year 1, by reading aloud and discussing their costumes with one another.
Our children also learned about lots of different authors and illustrators, and the inspiration behind the books they have written/illustrated. These include Cressida Cowell; Andy Stanton; Kiran Milwood; and Chris Riddell. Click on the link below if you want to find out more information!
